Volunteer Opportunities
Sub-committees
If you would like to participate directly in environmental awareness raising, you can join any of our four sub-committees to help coordinate and plan Somarelang Tikologo (ST) activities. The sub-committees meet every other month after working hours. The sub-committees are:
An ST volunteer can be involved in one or more of the following activities:
Journalist of the Year Coordinator
An award is presented annually to recognize the efforts of a journalist who has focused on environmental issues. The coordinator will organize a schedule of reviewing newspapers and determine a panel of judges to adjudicate the award.
Funding Opportunities Research
Funding is a key part of the continued success of ST and necessary for the development of new projects. In order to tap into the funds available, ST requires assistance identifying all applicable funding agencies, along with their focus, guidelines, timelines, etc.
Funding Proposal(s)
ST has identified funding agencies for upcoming projects. Due to limited human resources, ST requires assistance in developing the funding proposals for the projects. Volunteer(s) would work in conjunction with the Executive Officer and/or Project Officers to prepare the proposals.
Green Shop/ Stalls Assistant
The Green Shop and Stalls are both opportunities for ST to raise awareness of environmental issues through distributing information and selling promotional products or items made from recycled materials. We are looking for people to assist at the Green Shop or and/or at occasional Stalls.
Plastic Recycling Research Assistant
ST has a recycling drop-off centre for glass, paper, cans and plastics. We have problems with finding recycles for the plastics. We therefore are looking for a volunteer to undertake research into what recycling opportunities there are in Botswana for plastics, who is currently recycling where and what.
Promotional Materials Distribution
ST and the Green Shop have promotional materials (brochures, posters, leaflets, educational materials, etc.) that could be receiving greater distribution. Locations for these materials need to be identified (i.e. hotels, tourism locations, NGOs, libraries, etc.) and contact made to receive permission to distribute our materials at these locations. Raising awareness of environmental issues is a key focus for ST and setting up a distribution system would be invaluable.
Develop Information Sheets
ST is looking for a volunteer with an interest in researching and developing information sheets water, energy, fuel, wood conservation. Information sheets are also needed for the Environmental Vision and the Green Shop project. Volunteer(s) will work with Project Officers to garner background material and resources to develop the information sheets.
Develop promotional and educational materials
In addition to the assistance of developing the written content for the promotional and educational materials, ST is also seeking volunteers to design and produce the materials (i.e. booklets, leaflets, posters, etc.)
Research/Assessment on environmental education in the school environment
Although Environmental Education (EE) is often identified as part of the education system curriculum it can still be challenging to implement the programme in schools. Assistance to research the challenges and barriers and to strategize tactics to overcome these barriers is required to make EE a meaningful part of the curriculum.
Library/Resource Centre Assistant
ST maintains an environmental resource centre of books, magazines and videos. As the resource centre continues to expand, ST requires assistance in developing systems in organizing and managing the materials effectively. A volunteer with experience or knowledge of library or resource cataloguing systems would be a tremendous asset.
Organic Gardening Advisor
ST has developed an Organic Garden in the yard of the offices as a demonstration of peri-urban agriculture and as a fundraising opportunity through the sale of vegetables.
Newspaper Article/Column Writers
In an effort to increase coverage of environmental issues in the local media, ST encourages members to write articles on environmental issue for newspapers. We can provide topics of current interest or you can select issues that interest you. Our resource library is available for researching your topics. We can distribute the articles with ST endorsement to the appropriate newspapers. ST also produces a newsletter, which comes out bi-annually, and this calls people to submit articles for the newsletter.
Fundraising Assistant(s)
ST hosts various fundraising activities including the Annual Dinner Dance, the Annual General Meeting, Organic Gardening Sales, etc. The fundraising assistant(s) would have the opportunity to develop and implement the fundraising plans in conjunction with ST staff and fundraising committee members.
