UCEP Workshop
On Wednesday, May 28th, Somarelang Tikologo
hosted a training workshop for Bontleng residents and the ten
participating households of the second phase of the Urban-Agriculture
Community Empowerment Programme. Elsie Tolani Mvimi, National
Coordinator for GEF Small Grant Fund GSF, made the first presentation
on the eligibility, approval and implementation process. Mr. T.
Mathowa, Botswana College of Agriculture, briefed the audience on crop
rotation, green manure, compost, biological pest control, mechanical
cultivation, mechanical weed control and the application of organic
fertilizers. Participants then gathered in STs organic garden for a
demonstration on proper planting techniques led by Mr. Lloyd Bonomari,
ST Gardener. Before parting for the day, all households received the
necessary tools, donated by Somarelang Tikologo, needed to sustain
their own garden. This marked the beginning of the third phase of
monitoring by the ST office and record keeping performed by the ten
households. Overall, it was a successful day and certainly an exciting
one for the participants as they are now equipped with the tools and
knowledge to make this project flourish.
